Inventor Parametric Text

How to Create Parametric Text in a Drawing

In certain instances during your design process, it may be necessary to add text to dimensions or to create a note call-out in your drawing that actually references dimensional values or parameters in the Inventor model. This practice can be dangerous due to the fact that you are adding dumb or non-associative text data to the Inventor drawing. Any changes made to the model will not affect the text that was created in the drawing.

In the examples below, I will show you how to create parametric text in the Inventor drawing to ensure the text will change with respect to any model changes.

In the figure below , a model dimension has been edited to include a boss suffix as well as an additional line of text that indicates the diameter of a through hole in the boss feature. To make sure the 12 text is associative to the model, select the appropriate parameter from the Parameter list in the Format Text dialog box.

Tip: Rename the Parameter Name in the Parameters dialog box to make the values easier to locate.

Once the appropriate parameter has been selected, edit the number of decimal places to display (if necessary) and select the Add Parameter tool icon to place the parameter into the text field .

The color of the text in the text field will change to red indicating that it is a parameter and not just plain text .

If modifications are made to the model, the text in the drawing will automatically change as well.

This process will maintain associatively between the Inventor model and any text or note call-outs that reference model parameters .
